''Sun-Up'' Prosser invites into his circle of enchantment a young woman, Jean Serjeant, who is the daughter of the family with which the pilot is billeted. ''Staring at the Sun'' is her novel, and we follow her life right up to the 21st century and the eve of her 100th birthday, in 2021. Jean belongs to both the magical and the utilitarian worlds. As a child she plays games with her Uncle Leslie, who gives her a pot of hyacinth bulbs in a bag and warns her not to peek at them while they sprout in the dark. He and the girl exchange riddles - ''Why is the mink so excessively tenacious of life?'' and ''When Lindbergh flew the Atlantic, he had five sandwiches with him. He only ate one and a half. What happened to the others?'' When the games are revealed as tricks (the bulbs are golf tees), Leslie and Jean put their heads back and scream at heaven. The trick becomes an enigma: Do golf tees sprout? The answer, we suspect from the beginning, is not as important as the question. The Viennese wit Karl Kraus once wrote that the artist is one who turns solutions into enigmas, and in ''Staring at the Sun,'' simple-hearted, ordinary Jean Serjeant is both the subject and the object of an art of enchantment. The real riddle she poses is: are ordinary human beings condemned to ordinary, humdrum lives, or is there still a possibility of enchantment?
