Question d'origine :
Des filles nobles luthériennes de 16, 17 et 18 ans sont transférées dans un couvent de religieuses et vont prendre le voile peu de temps après. Leur père a abjuré mais pas leur mère qui refuse le transfert de ses filles. Mais comme c'est Louis XIV qui a commandité cette affaire, on ne peut pas l'empêcher. Heureusement grâce à la mère une des trois réussit dans la nuit qui précède le départ pour le couvent à s'échapper.
Louis XIV n'est d'ailleurs pas content. Ma question est la suivante : peut-on considérer, malgré le contexte de l'époque (cela ce passe en 1686, donc un an après la Révocation de l'Edit de Nantes) que cela ressemble à un rapt ? Des filles mineures auraient-elles pu refuser de prendre l'habit ? Les religieuses avaient-elles des méthodes à elles pour en arriver à convaincre ces pauvres filles qui pourtant au départ avouaient qu'elles ne se laisseraient pas convaincre d'abandonner leur religion ?

Bonjour,
En amont et à l’issue de la révocation de l’édit de Nantes, Louis XIV met en place une politique particulièrement répressive vis-à-vis des Protestants. On sait l’effroi que suscitèrent notamment les Dragons « ou “missionnaires bottés” [qui] font subir aux familles huguenotes toutes les exactions possibles. La peur qu’ils suscitent est telle que l’annonce de leur arrivée suffit souvent à créer un mouvement massif d’abjurations ». (Encyclopédie du protestantisme, sous la direction de Pierre Gisel).
Les envois au couvent de jeunes filles s’inscrivent dans ce processus coercitif.
Dans son article « une communauté protestante au XVIII siècle », l’historien Didier Boisson évoque l’intendant de la généralité de Bourges qui « propose d’ôter les enfants aux pères et mères protestants “s’ils sont convaincus de négliger de les envoyer régulièrement aux catéchismes et instructions”. Les filles doivent être placées dans des couvents, les garçons chez les curés et, si la pension n’est pas payée, les enfants envoyés à l’hôpital général ».
Malgré la politique qui enjoint à la conversion générale des Protestants (et qui légitimera la révocation de l’Edit de Nantes, devenu soi-disant inutile, puisqu’il n’y aurait eu désormais que des Catholiques en France !), certains, comme le rappelle le site du Musée du protestantisme, « refusent d’abjurer. Malgré le dernier article de l’édit de Fontainebleau stipulant que ceux de la Religion Prétendue Réformée (R.P.R) peuvent “continuer leur commerce ou jouir de leurs biens sans pouvoir être troublés” à condition de ne pas faire d’exercice public de leur religion, ils sont le plus souvent persécutés et de toute façon leurs enfants doivent être baptisés et élevés dans la religion catholique ».
On le voit, quelle que soit les choix des parents, les enfants se doivent d’embrasser le catholicisme. Et pour les mauvais catholiques - ces Nouveaux Convertis qui ne joueraient pas suffisamment le jeu de l’Eglise - on confisque les biens ou l’on retire leurs enfants pour les placer dans des établissements catholiques.
Est-ce un rapt ? De notre point de vue moderne, sans nul doute. Mais encore une fois, ces retraits d’enfants ou de jeunes gens pour les placer en institution catholique relève d’une politique d’Etat, légalisée par la révocation de l’Edit de Nantes. Légitimement, les Protestants contestent ces enlèvements. C’est ce qu’évoque Isabelle Poutrin dans son carnet de recherche « La conversion des enfants et des jeunes correspondait à deux objectifs : endoctriner plus facilement des esprits encore malléables, et porter le désordre dans les familles. En 1675 les réformés normands se plaignaient des enlèvements d’enfants dans des couvents pour les convertir : “Ceux de notre religion sont réduits à n’oser plus corriger leurs enfants de peur de les perdre et de les exposer en proie à des gens qui vont dans toutes les villes établies pour profiter de leur faiblesse et de leurs ressentiments inconsidérés, ce qui est d’une dangereuse conséquence dans l’Etat, dont la tranquillité dépend de la bonne éducation de ceux qui les composent et ce qui est encore plus étranger et tout à fait contraire à l’esprit du christianisme” »
En outre, il faut souligner avec l’historienne Alexandra Roger le rôle central et quasi-omnipotent du père dans les familles de la France moderne. « Le père de famille jouit d’un droit général de commandement sur ses enfants et sa famille, ainsi que des droits particuliers de garde et de correction ». C’est l’héritage de la patria potestas (la puissance des pères) du droit romain dont il est si souvent question dans les pièces de Molière ! Ce pouvoir du père sur ses enfants renforce l’idée qu’il s’agit là d’une décision tout à fait légale ou en tout cas conformes aux normes sociales de l’époque.
L’article d’Alexandra Roger (« Contester l'autorité parentale : les vocations religieuses forcées au XVIIIe siècle en France ») rappelle enfin que la vocation religieuse forcée ne se limite pas aux Protestants soumis à la révocation de l’Edit de Nantes. Elle se définit comme « une entrée dans l’état ecclésiastique qui s’effectue contre la volonté de l’individu, sous le poids de la contrainte parentale, et qui s’accompagne généralement de menaces et de mauvais traitements ». C’est dans cette histoire des vocations forcées que l’on pourrait inscrire les cas que vous évoquez dans votre question. Cette contrainte s’exerce sur toutes les classes de la société, sur les hommes comme sur les femmes, au sein même de la sphère catholique :
« Des milieux marchands à la noblesse véritable ou apparentée, l’origine sociale des réclamants est variée. Ils sont enfants de gentilshommes, de bourgeois, de marchands, de médecins du roi ou encore d’officiers de justice […].Loin du topos littéraire selon lequel les vocations religieuses forcées seraient un phénomène exclusivement féminin, 82,5 % des 978 demandes d’annulation de vœux de religion adressées au pape et jugées par la Congrégation entre 1668 et 1793, sont le fait d’hommes ».
